Copyright
The creator of a work, whether it is literary, scientific or artistic, is the owner of this work. The creator has the exclusive right to publish or multiply his/her work.
This right is called the "copyright" of the author. Copyright covers:
- Books, brochures, newsletters, magazines, translations
- Lectures, speeches or presentations
- Musical compositions
- Paintings, architecture, sculptures, handwork, illustrations
- Photographs, films, radio or television programs
- Computer programs, etc.
At the Bureau for Intellectual Property you can get information on how your copyright is protected,
both locally and internationally.
The Bureau for Intellectual Property of the Netherlands Antilles offers on a monthly basis an
interesting theme publication on copyright "Info Copyright" in three different languages.

i-Envelope, a brilliant idea?
A copyright arises from the mere creation of for example a text. It does not require the formality of a
legal registration. But we imagined you want to formalize it as your intellectual property. Therefore,
the Bureau for Intellectual Property introduced the i-Envelope. It offers the
possibility to record
the creation date and the capacity as author of a creation in a fast, easy and affordable way.

Patent registration
A patent is the exclusive right of an inventor to commercialize his/her invention without fear of competition from others. In order to qualify for the registration of a patent, it must concern a new and original invention that can have an industrial application. The request to register a patent requires a detailed description of the invention, preferably accompanied by a technical drawing. A patent that has been granted is valid both in The Netherlands and in the Netherlands Antilles.

ISBN registration
ISBN is an international number to register books: International Standard Book Number. It is a unique identifier for a book and from the number you can even distinguish from what part of the world the book originates. The Bureau for Intellectual Property is exclusively authorised to grant ISBN numbers to all books published in the Netherlands Antilles. The author must place a request for this on time, so that the ISBN number can be printed on a visible spot in the book.

Trademark registration
A Trademark can consist of either a word or an image, or a combination of both.
To prevent other people from abusing the Trademark of your product or organization, you can have it registered.
The registration of a Trademark guarantees protection in the Netherlands Antilles for a period of ten years. After that, the registration must be renewed. If the owner of the Trademark lives abroad, a proxy residing in the Netherlands Antilles must be authorized to hand in the request for the Trademark registration.
